Greenwich Safe Rides has developed youth leaders and increased public safety since 1982. The program is designed to combat the dangers of at-risk situations by providing youth with a "Safe Ride" home - no questions asked. These at-risk situations can be varied: babysitters who might not be comfortable getting in a car with a parent who had been drinking; students whose designated driver(s) left early or became otherwise engaged; kids who are hanging with their friends and just have a gut feeling the scene is no longer safe; and teens who should not be driving under the influence.
Safe Rides members are trained volunteers with energy and commitment to serve the community. Through this program, youth are engaged in community service and support the American Red Cross and its mission. In the past, many Safe Rides members have expanded their interest in community service activities by volunteering in other capacities at the Red Cross, or by taking on various leadership responsibilities within the youth community - leading youth conferences, coordinating events with other community organizations, joining our Youth Council, working on our Disaster Action Team and more. As a Safe Rides member you will aid in fundraising and outreach activities in the Greenwich area.
Commitment
We host four recruitments each year at Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy, Brunswick School and Convent of the Sacred Heart. Every teen is required to attend mandatory trainings on vehicle/radio operation, Health & Safety skills, substance abuse education, and leadership development. After completing training, each teen will be assigned to a Safe Rides team and is required to volunteer one weekend evening every six weeks.
To join Safe Rides:
Greenwich High School: There will be a sign-up table in the student center during lunch blocks on Tuesday - Friday, January 19 to 22. Current Safe Rides Team Leaders will be distributing recruitment packets, taking registrations, and answering questions.
Brunswick School and Greenwich Academy will have individual recruitment. Students should contact these Safe Rides Team Leaders for more information: Nick Fowler, Tom Polack, Will Biondi or Adrian Sheppe.
CPR and First Aid certification is required for all new members. The Red Cross will hold three free CPR/First Aid classes for new members on the dates listed below. Students MUST PREREGISTER for the class of their choice. All sessions are held at the Greenwich Chapter, 99 Indian Field Road, Greenwich.

Adult On-Premise (AOP)
Since the inception of Greenwich Safe Rides in the fall of 1982, the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross has required an adult to be present at the chapter house on every evening that the service operates. The primary responsibilities of the AOP are to provide mature guidance and assistance in the event of an emergency or logistical problem, and to provide a communications link between the student Team Leader and the adult leaders of the program. It is the presence and support of adults, mainly parents of teen participants, which help encourage our Red Cross youth volunteers in their effort to serve the Greenwich community.
To call Safe Rides:
