In chapter 3, I estimate the effect of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) on children's test scores. I use a two-stage estimation to eliminate the self-selection bias since the participation of the NSLP is not randomly decided and welfare stigma may have some influence on children's participation in the program. In the first stage I estimate a model of NSLP participation. In the second stage I estimate the educational production function that includes the inverse Mills ratio to obtain consistent estimators. The two-stage estimation shows a positive but insignificant effect on the test scores of the recipients.In addition, the base category of these race variables is mainly composed of Hispanics, whose sample size is considerably smaller than those of whites and blacks.
